Why Competing Estate Planning Firms Appear in AI Answers

A competing estate planning firm appears when you ask AI about local attorneys, while yours is absent. Before attributing that result to a secret ranking factor, inspect the question and the answer. Is the request about a living trust, probate representation, or estate planning more broadly?

Atelo uses “information gap” to describe something observable: a missing service explanation, an outdated profile, or an inconsistency between sources. Those gaps are worth addressing. They do not, by themselves, prove why an AI system chose one firm over another.

Inspect the Answer Before Explaining It

Begin with what the answer shows. Record each firm mentioned and open any cited sources. Note whether the source actually supports the description of that firm. An answer can also make an unsupported or incorrect statement, which should be recorded as an error rather than accepted as fact.

Next, compare your own public information. Does your website make the same relevant facts easy to verify? Keep observations separate from hypotheses: “our probate page is not linked from navigation” is an observation; “that caused the missing mention” is a hypothesis.

An Illustrative Information Audit

The following is an illustrative information audit, not a comparison of real firms or measured AI results. It contrasts common gaps with a more complete presentation of the same firm. Neither column predicts a recommendation.

A complete profile gives you a better foundation for accurate communication. It does not establish a minimum number of posts, reviews, schema types, or directory mentions needed to appear in AI. Treat any such quota as a claim that needs evidence.

Be Specific About the Work You Do

For an estate planning firm, specificity starts with real services. “We offer wills and living trusts from our [City] office” is clearer than “complete solutions for every stage of life,” provided the statement is accurate. The attorney should review any explanation of what those services accomplish.

Use plain language to help a prospective client decide whether to contact the firm. Publishing more variations of the same sentence adds little. A useful page answers a distinct question, identifies its intended audience, and offers an appropriate next step.

Track Changes Without Assuming Causation

Keep a dated change log for the firm’s website and public profiles. Record which service descriptions, attorney biographies, and contact details were corrected. This makes later reports easier to interpret.

Repeat the original questions under comparable conditions and include both positive and negative results. A change in mentions after an update is an observation, not proof of causation. Platform behavior and other public information may have changed too.

Prioritize Useful Corrections

Prioritize issues that affect prospective clients directly: wrong contact details, unclear services, inaccessible pages, and unsupported professional claims. The value of fixing those issues does not depend on an immediate AI mention.

Turn a Gap into a Work Plan

Illustrative Workflow · Trust Administration
Make an existing service easier to discover

Suppose a firm handles trust administration but does not describe it on its website. The work plan is to confirm the service with the attorney, draft an accurate page, obtain approval, link it clearly, and record the update. Follow-up searches then show whether the firm appears for relevant questions. No improvement is assumed in advance.

What to Review This Week

A first review can be focused and manageable. Choose a few questions that reflect your firm’s actual services, then work through these checks:

  1. Save answers for a small set of local estate planning questions, including prompts where your firm is absent.
  2. Compare cited pages with your own website, attorney profiles, and principal business listings.
  3. Prepare a short list of verifiable corrections and content gaps for the firm to review.

Your firm controls the accuracy of its own information, not the recommendations an AI platform makes. Request your AI Visibility Report for a recorded starting point and a clearer view of competing firms in your local market.
